A coil winding machine can be set to coil wire in a variety of ways to produce different results as needed. Just some of the extensive list of coil types includes:
- relays
- resistors
- stators
- rotor
- transformer coiled within motors or generators
Personally, I think it can be funny or interesting watching how the machine coil around “Air”. Most coiling is done around a reel so the Air Coil is one of the more unique styles of coiling that is done.
There are times when other elements are needed to be added like terminals. Sometimes it is necessary to coat the wire with an insulation material prior to winding. For even better conduction the covering will be heated, baked or even vacuum impregnated into the wire.
Some companies will actually buy a coil winding machine to do the coiling themselves. The general consensus is that they would be much better off hiring another company to do it for them. One important thing to look for if you do hire an independent company is that they can do, what is called, perfect layer winding (professional called orthocyclic coil winding). This kind of winding makes more compact coils for you to use.
There are a wide variety of machines available to choose from. You can find a coil winding machine that is designed for doing uniquely small jobs. You can even buy hand operated ones and others with a drive or torque winders. These are usually controlled by a foot pedal.
For more complex coiling jobs you want to use high speed winding benches. These are used to make trigger coils, solenoid coils, RF/IF coils, and other more specialized kinds of coils.
In the past you could only buy this kind of equipment and even that had to be arranged through very few companies. Today it’s much easier. You can buy a coil winding machine right off the Internet. There are lots of sites where this kind of equipment can be found, but you still need to be cautious when you do make purchases over the net. Having some specialized knowledge and doing your homework will go a long way to ensuring that you get a good machine. Just try to make sure that the company has a guarantee and that it has a reputation of honoring that guarantee.
For smaller machines you can easily buy a winding machine from Amazon or E-bay but if you are a professional user, intending to use the machine a lot, it is highly recommended that you buy through one of the bigger – more specialized – suppliers or even directly from the coil winding machine factory.
As you probably know, coil winding machines are used to make electromagnetic coils out of copper or aluminum, which are then used in all sorts equipment. From small relays, to large generators, the type of coil needed depends on the piece of equipment; this also means that the type of coil winding machine needed depends on the type of coil being produced.
To help you understand a little more about coil winding machines, let’s take a quick look at the two basic types of coil winding machines – manual machines, and automatic machines.
A manual coil winding machine is one that is hand operated, and uses no electricity. This type of winding machine is often used for winding thin or delicate wire, and for other delicate winding operations. Larger manual models are generally used by large manufacturers, while small, compact manual coil winding machines are often used by hobbyists.
Automatic coil winding machines rely on electricity for operation, and come in a huge variety of sub-types, including high speed winding benches, medium duty coil winding benches, and heavy duty coil winding benches (just to name a few). Some are very basic in design, and others have advanced features like touch LCD screens. Automatic coil winding machines are most often used by coil manufacturers, rather than hobbyists.

Automatic or Manual Coil Winding Machines? Both!
Did you know that up until the mid 1950′s, all coil winding done for use in equipment was done by hand? Up until then, all coil winding was done by coil winders, who were generally men with enough physical strength and stamina to produce perfectly coiled wires over and over, for hours at a time. They would use hand operated coil winding machines, and would sometimes need up to two or three days to complete a coil. And while these men were good at their jobs, there were two problems: speed, and accuracy. To address this need, automatic coil winding machines came on the market.
These days, machinery part manufacturers use both manual coil winding machines, and automatic coil winding machines. An automatic coil winding machine would be used for heavy duty applications, or applications where speed and accuracy are necessary. A manual coil winding machine would be used for producing more delicate coils, or for ones with unique shape and structure. Most manufacturers have both types of machines in their shops, and have employees who are trained to use both. So in terms of coil winding machines, it’s not about choosing one or the other, because both manual and automatic machines are necessary – choosing the “right” one just depends on the coil being made.
